Meet the  Director of Choral Music

Mrs. Katie Villarreal

Esperanza High School

Mrs. Villarreal is in her first year at Esperanza High School. She currently conducts three ensembles, Vocal Ensemble, Vivace (Advanced Women's Choir), and Concert Choir. In addition to working at Esperanza, Mrs. Villarreal teaches with another choral director in the district at Yorba Linda Middle School, where she directs the Mixed Ensemble.  ​In fall 2019, two new sections will be added to the Esperanza Choral Music Program, Men's Choir (Bass Choir) and Women's Choir (Treble Choir)!
Mrs. Villarreal is a graduate of California State University Bakersfield. She earned her Bacherlor's of Arts in Music, emphasis in Vocal Performance and Music Education with a minor in Theatre. Mrs. Villarreal earned a single subject teaching credential in Music from the same university. It was at CSU Bakersfield where she performed as the lead vocalist for the 80 piece symphonic band for three years, under the direction of Dr. Patricia A. Childress. Mrs. Villarreal debuted in many opera scenes, performed lead roles in musical and opera performances as well. Mrs. Villarreal is a Irene Ryan Scholarship Nominee for her role as Hortense in the CSU Bakersfield Theatre productiopn of ​​​​​​​​​​​The Boyfriend in 2005. Mrs. Villarreal Made her Los Angeles debut as a professional artist at Santa Monica Community College in 2009. Mrs. Villarreal has worked with top music coaches in Southern California, including Peggy Sears, Brent McMunn, Mark Lamanna, and Elizabeth Hynes. In addition to Mrs. Villarreal's performance carrer she is a seasoned music teacher. She has worked with many students of all ages both in the private and public sector. Villarreal has had her private voice studio for the past 14 years and has been teaching public school for 9 years. 
Villarreal is member of National Association of Music Educators, California Music Educators Association, American Choral Directors Association, Calfornia Choral Directors Association, and Southern California Choral Directors Association.  Villarreal is looking forward to making wonderful music with students in Orange County and continuing the Aztec tradition of Excellence in Choral Music at Esperanza High School.

Meet the

Carolyn Clark Rugh

Esperanza High School
​Anaheim, California

As the current accompanist for the Esperanza Choral Music Program, Mrs. Rugh has been working with the choirs since 2008. She is a very special part of the program and has provided excellent musianship as well as fantastic coaching to the students within the Choral Program  for 10 years. As an alunmi from Esperanza High School, Mrs. Rugh is an Aztec through and through. She is committed to ensuring the success of the  choral students within the program.   In addition to her dedicated service to the Esperanza Choral Music program, Mrs. Rugh is a private piano teacher.  In addition to teaching, Mrs. Rugh  is a highly sought after accompanist throughout the Orange County area.

Mrs. Rugh received her Bachelor of Music degree from the University of Southern California  in piano performance and her Master of Music degree from Indiana University, Bloomington, in piano performance with a cognate field in music theory. 

As a high school student, Mrs. Rugh twice won first place in the Southern California Junior Bach Festival and first place in the California Music Educators Association Piano Competition. She was selected for the Young Artists Guild, the highest award possible in the MTAC Certificate of Merit program. 

Mrs. Rugh is a member of the Music Teachers Association of 
California, Orange County Branch, where she has served as recording secretary and financial secretary.  She is also a member of the National Guild of Piano Teachers. Mrs. Rugh currently sings with the Pacific Chorale under the direction of Dr. Robert Istad. 

The Esperanza Choral Music program is fortunate to have Mrs. Rugh be a part of the team!
